The rectors of the 11 member institutions of the UP University Alliance have unanimously approved the new position paper “Towards Financial Sustainability in European University Alliances: The UP University Approach.” The document outlines a shared vision for ensuring the long-term viability of European University Alliances by building robust governance systems and transparent, equitable internal funding mechanisms. It highlights the challenges created by the project-based nature of European funding and calls for predictable models that strengthen institutional commitment and strategic continuity.
The paper details the UP University model as a structured and replicable framework based on proportional financial contributions, clear governance structures, and strategic flexibility. It also presents recommendations for alliances across Europe, encouraging them to adopt transparent internal contribution formulas, integrate alliance governance into institutional structures, advocate for national co-funding, and simplify administrative procedures. With this collective endorsement, UP University reinforces its commitment to shaping a sustainable future for collaborative higher education in Europe.
